Why use bamboo to make bicycles?
Bamboo is called vegetable steel, as strong as steel and as light as aluminium. It is not only environmentally friendly but also more lightweight and durable than steel, with a tensile strength of 28,000 per square inch compared to 23,000 for steel. Bamboo, like carbon fibre, is a composite material with endless durability. And, well, it naturally grows in poles! How perfect for building bicycles.
Bamboo bikes are sustainable & environment-friendly.
Bamboo is a raw and natural material. Producing a frame is far less energy-intensive than steel or aluminium. It can be grown and harvested sustainably, making it environmentally friendly.
This makes it a perfect alternative for people wanting to reduce their carbon footprint. Compared to a standard steel or aluminium bike, each bicycle emits up to five kilograms less CO2.
Bamboo bikes are Lightweight.
Bio Bamboo bicycle frames are made almost entirely of raw bamboo making them incredibly light.
We use steel for the dropouts, bottom bracket, head tube and top of the seat tube to fit standard components. We use a fine layer of carbon fibre and then hemp fibre to wrap the joints for both strength and aesthetics.
Bamboo bikes are strong.
Bamboo has better tensile strength than steel because of the rigid fibres.
Bamboo bikes can withstand a greater shock than carbon fibre bikes without cracking or breaking. Apart from being strong, its shock-dampening qualities make for a smoother, more comfortable ride.
